As facial skin and soft tissue injuries heal, they can sometimes leave behind unsightly scars. Scar revision reconstructive surgery involves geometric rearrangement of surrounding skin to maximally camouflage scars and restore more normal contour and symmetry to the face. Additional procedures can be done to smooth the skin as well with a surgical procedure called a dermabrasion.
These procedures can often be done under local anesthesia or light sedation on an outpatient basis. If an incision is made there will be sutures in place for one week. If you doctor recommends dermabrasion, this is sometimes done more than once but over time can help smooth out irregularities in the skin.
Patients typically have a very short recovery but are cautioned to protect healing wounds and scars from significant sun exposure, which can cause them to darken and become more visible.
