It is common knowledge that as we age our skin loses elasticity. However, did you know that even your eyelids lose their elasticity? Droopy eyelids can affect more than just your confidence; vision can suffer as well. Luckily, with help from facial plastic surgeons at Blepharoplasty Wake Forest Baptist Health in Clemmons, NC, you can improve this condition with blepharoplasty.

What is blepharoplasty?
Blepharoplasty, also known as an “eyelid lift”, is a procedure to remove excess skin on the eyelids. Though the eyelid is not necessarily lifted, the end result provides a younger look with tighter skin, giving the eyelid a lifted appearance. Most patients undergoing this procedure are back to their daily life within 7 to 10 days. Healing is generally complete after two weeks.

What does blepharoplasty treat?
Blepharoplasty can be used to treat various conditions, such as:

  • droopy eyelids
  • extra skin over the eyelid which interferes with peripheral vision
  • bags under the eyes
  • drooping skin under the eye causing the white part of the eye under the iris to show

The Procedure
Blepharoplasty is performed as an outpatient procedure, meaning you will not be required to stay in the hospital overnight. This procedure can be done in the office with numbing medicine or using a twilight anesthesia in one of our certified operating rooms. The procedure is usually completed in under 90 minutes.

After surgery, you may experience temporary blurred vision, watery eyes, sensitivity and some swelling or bruising. If you wear contacts, you should wear glasses for at least two weeks after surgery. Cool compresses help reduce swelling. Follow your doctor’s instructions for applying prescription ointments or drops.
